World Kindness Day at the Vegetarian Society
November 13th is World Kindness Day – a day meant to remind us that small acts of kindness can allow us to connect with each other, ourselves and our individual values. World Kindness Day is designed to let people spread kindness through their lives by taking part in ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ – small actions with big impacts.
What is World Kindness Day?
The Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Foundation began in the 1990’s, determined to change a media focus from random acts of violence towards a kinder, more positive world. They believe that encouraging people to be kinder to each other and the planet throughout the year has a positive impact on communities, individuals and the world as a whole. World Kindness Day is the culmination of a yearly calendar the RAK Foundation organises every year.
How does being kind improve your life?
Being kind throughout your day has proven health benefits. People who do things we consider kind have vastly superior measurable health outcomes than those who don’t. People who volunteer for two or more organisations over the age of 55 are 44% less likely to die early. Being kind produces more Serotonin – the pleasure chemical. It also produces more Oxytocin – often referred to as the love chemical. People who are regularly kind have 23% less Cortisol – the stress hormone – than the average person. People who are often anxious or depressed notice a significant improvement in their moods when they carry out regular acts of kindness.
How can you be kind today?
We support the intentions of World Kindness Day. We believe that one of the most rewarding ways to be kind is to consider those that cannot advocate for themselves. Supporting the Vegetarian Society allows you to be kind to the planet, animals and your health. You can support us in lots of ways – from signing our petition to ban Hatch and Dispatch, to attending one of our cookery schools, or even signing up to become a full member. Any help you can provide lets us spend more of our time and efforts on being kind to animals.
Our work
The Vegetarian Society works to promote a vegetarian diet. We do this in a few ways. Firstly, we campaign throughout the year to encourage vegetarianism and to fight against cruelty to animals. For example, we are running a campaign against the practice of egg-culling – killing male chicks at birth because they cannot lay eggs. We also run a cookery school – COOK! – which can teach anyone to cook vegetarian food, from experienced veggies to absolute beginners. Finally, through our members, we are able to use the voices of thousands of people to advocate for animals and the planet.
This World Kindness Day, give yourself and animals around the world a boost with the power of kindness, and support us however you can.
