The Vegetarian Society was delighted to once again judge and sponsor two categories at this year’s British Pie Awards, which saw several businesses awarded for their veggie and vegan pies!

Our Chief Executive, Richard McIlwain, and staff members Chris Ogden and Kate Kenny attended the three-day event at St. Mary’s Church in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire last week, with Richard presenting the awards to the veggie and vegan winners on Friday.

The British Pie Awards – the most prestigious in the pie world – took place for the 16th time this year, having been running since 2009.

Richard said on X: “Wonderful winners of the Vegetarian Society-sponsored veggie and vegan pie categories at the British Pie Awards in Melton Mowbray.

“Great to see delicious meat-free pies being showcased!”

The British Pie Awards traditionally take place each year as part of British Pie Week, which fell this year on 4–8 March.

The awards are a key part of the Vegetarian Society’s calendar, as we have now sponsored and judged the Vegetarian and Vegan Pie categories for several years.

Chris and Kate formed part of the team of 160 professionals judging this year’s awards, which covered 24 different classes including a new fusion pie class.

The number of veggie and vegan entries to the awards remains strong, with pies covered by the two classes winning 23 awards in total this year.

The winner of the Vegetarian class this year was a Sweet Potato, Spinach and Coconut Curry Pie made by the Bell Hotel and Pie Shop in Buckinghamshire.

Turner’s Pies Ltd scooped the prize in the Vegan class for their Butternut Chilli and Vegan Cheese Pie.

Congratulations to the winners, and we look forward to supporting the British Pie Awards again next year!
