Hear from Our Supporters

Kenton Price

“I want to challenge people’s habits—too often, people say they love animals, but then eat them. We live in an age where animals don’t need to suffer, and we don’t need to feel deprived when it comes to meal choices.”

Kenton’s Story

Michael Krause

“I’ve protected the people I love and ensured the Vegetarian Society can continue to make the world a better place. I trust the Vegetarian Society to decide what’s most important when the time comes.”

Impact gifts in Wills have had

Wendy – A Lifelong Commitment to Compassion

The Vegetarian Society is proud to honour the memory of Professor Wendy Rosalind James CBE FBA (1940–2024).  Wendy was a lifelong vegetarian, distinguished scholar, and generous supporter who included a gift in her Will to help continue the Society’s vital work.

Wendy’s connection with the Society began in her childhood in Grasmere, in the Lake District, where her mother, Isabel James, ran the celebrated vegetarian guesthouse Rothay Bank.

Isabel was a leading figure in the Vegetarian Society for many years — heading the Food and Cookery Section and later serving as President. Her kitchen was renowned for inventive vegetarian dishes long before plant-based eating became mainstream, and it was there that Wendy’s lifelong values took root.

A fourth-generation vegetarian, Wendy grew up believing that compassion for animals and care for the planet was simply part of a good life. As a teenager and student, she played an active role in the Young British Vegetarians, editing their newsletter and encouraging others to embrace a kinder way of living.

She lived by her beliefs — never afraid to stand up for them, even walking out of a formal dinner at Oxford when meat was served.

After graduating from St Hugh’s College, Oxford, Wendy built a remarkable career as a social anthropologist, teaching in Khartoum, Bergen, and for over 35 years at Oxford University.

Her pioneering fieldwork in Sudan and Ethiopia earned her international recognition, as well as the honour of a CBE in 2011 and Fellowship of the British Academy. In 2023, Oxford established the Wendy James Associate Professorship in Evolutionary Anthropology, ensuring her influence endures in academia.

Wendy saw vegetarianism not as a rule, but as a joyful expression of care for all living things

By including a gift in her Will to the Vegetarian Society, Wendy ensured that her lifelong principles would continue to inspire future generations. Her gift is one of kindness, and a belief in a better, more compassionate world.

Include your own commitment to compassion.

Just like Wendy, you can help build a kinder future for people, the planet, and for animals.
